I joined Twitter a couple days ago. This, after months of being convinced that Twitter is retarded and self-indulgent and pretty much useless. Now that I'm part of it, I'm still not completely sold. My initial misgivings about Twitter may prove true. I'll give it a chance for a month or two. Time will tell.
Anyway, as if reading my mind, Jon Stewart devoted a segment to Twitter (and the ridiculousness of its growing pervasiveness) the following night:
Twitter's one of several interesting tech phenomena developed as of late that makes it easier for people to post (usually irrelevant) BS about themselves and what they're doing in their lives. I don't really care that you just uploaded your pictures. I don't care if your flight got delayed. I don't care what song you're listening to. I don't care what book you're reading...
On the other hand, I do. Or at least someone somewhere does. I think Twitter can be useful for people who actually have something to say, something to share with masses of people, something that people (for whatever reason) care about. So Twitter may not be good for me right now, but it might just be amazing once I have something to spread to the world - stories, videos, maybe even a noteworthy blog.
Plus it's pretty interesting to know firsthand how Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore are spending their days. Useless, but interesting.

Ha! I love that you're on twitter. I'm a twitter goddess after my work at The Tech. I'm not sold on it for individuals but its a great way to shamelessly advertise to people who are interested in your company. For that, it's pretty useful!
PS the video's not working...poop.
Ooh thanks for the heads up about the vid. Think it's working now.
